One way of understanding the evolution of the university is through a series of overlapping models. University 1.0 made teaching its primary mission. University 2.0 joined teaching with a formal research mission. University 3.0 added a third mission centered on innovation, entrepreneurship, and contribution to economic and social development. University 4.0 is associated with digital transformation, advanced technology, and closer alignment with a rapidly changing economy.

University 5.0, as we define it, re-centers human development, social responsibility, sustainability, and the public purpose of education within institutional life.
