Applied research and public scholarship.

The University 5.0 Institute examines how colleges and universities can extend their educational mission across a lifetime of learning without reducing education to a short-term response to labor-market demand.

Drawing on applied research, field inquiry, policy analysis, and public scholarship, the Institute studies the institutional structures, academic judgments, and public commitments that shape continuing, professional, and workforce education. Its purpose is to develop the ideas and evidence higher education needs to build credible credentials, navigable pathways, and a more serious account of learning acquired through work and life.

Our Central Question

What must the university become when learning extends across a lifetime?

Five Questions Guiding Our Research

1. What does an education connected to work owe the learner beyond immediate employability?

2. How should colleges and universities recognize learning acquired through work, professional practice, military service, and life?

3. What makes a noncredit credential academically credible and worthy of public trust?

4. How should institutions govern learning that crosses credit, noncredit, employer, and community boundaries?

5. What should universities measure if the purpose is meaningful learner movement rather than program volume?

Five Ways We Build the Field

1. Research Papers and Briefs
   Applied research, working papers, white papers, and focused analyses of consequential questions in workforce, continuing, and lifelong education.

2. Field Studies and Case Analyses
   Studies of institutional practices, emerging models, implementation challenges, and the experiences of learners and practitioners.

3. Public Scholarship and Commentary
   Essays and critical analysis that question prevailing assumptions and connect scholarly ideas with institutional practice.

4. Convenings and Collaborative Inquiry
   Roundtables, research conversations, and facilitated exchanges that bring scholars, practitioners, policymakers, and institutional leaders into shared inquiry.

5. Frameworks and Practice Resources
   Conceptual models, diagnostics, guides, and other resources that translate research into forms institutions and practitioners can use.

The University 5.0 Workforce Education Framework

The University 5.0 Workforce Education Framework provides an intellectual and operational foundation for understanding workforce education as a core institutional capability. It identifies five capabilities colleges and universities must develop together to connect academic purpose, governance, pathway design, credential quality, labor-market relevance, and learner mobility.

The questions facing continuing, professional, and workforce education cannot be answered by one institution or discipline. The University 5.0 Institute welcomes collaboration with scholars, practitioners, institutional leaders, policymakers, and associations interested in advancing the field.

Potential collaborations may include field studies, research partnerships, commissioned papers, roundtables, and contributions to the Institute’s public scholarship.
